I found that students were always interested in challenges to identify common items or things. I would locate pictures taken with electron microscopes and challenge them to identify what is in the picture.
This would cause their use of critical thinking skills and inquiry-based investigative research as they sought to identify the objects in the pictures.
I would post a picture for a week, giving everyone a chance to submit an answer (in writing) before I disclosed the answer.
Winners would win extra points on tests or other prizes.
